Fresh off the back of a resounding victory in the Listed Hareeba Stakes (1200m), Jockey Nash Rawiller believes talented four-year-old Knoydart is capable of Group 1 success, and now appears a likely prospect for the 2014 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) on March 8th.
In his most recent victory, Knoydart sat off the pace before breaking from the packing in impressing form rounding the final bend to claim yesterday’s event at Mornington to win by a comfortable four lengths.
The son of More Than Ready has now scored three back-to-back victories since his gelding in December; a feat Darley representative Paul Snowden said would not have happened had the procedure not taken place.
“Gelding him has been the making of the horse. His first two runs back have been super and he’s really starting to reach a peak” Snowden said immediately after the Hareeba Stakes triumph.
With another minor the only race on the horizon for Knoydart prior to the resounding victory, Snowden conceded plans will have to be reviewed completely before the next move is made.
“I think that we will really need to reassess; we only earmarked another Listed race here in two or three weeks’ time for him, but we may need to look at something else” he added.
Jockey Nash Rawiller is certain Knoydart can perform at the top level of Australian Racing, highlighting short-distance handicap events as a realistic option for the in-form four-year-old.
“In a high pressure handicap he is up to winning a Group 1 on the right day” Rawiller told TVN.
With weight for the 2014 Newmarket Handicap due to be released on February 25th, handicapper Neil Kennings told TVN Knoydart would likely be allocated around 53-53.5kgs; a relatively standard weight to carry over the 1200m trip.
