Group 1 winning mare Streama has been included in the 2014 Breeders Classicfinal field and will begin her autumn campaign in the Group 2 event at Rosehill Gardens this weekend.
Streama was included in the nominations for both the Breeders Classic and the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington, but trainer Guy Walter has elected to keep the daughter of Stratum in Sydney for the Breeders Classic.
The five-year-old only had three starts during her 2013 Spring Racing Carnival campaign, winning the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) and finishing second in both the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m), and Walter believes she has returned from a stint in the spelling paddock in excellent condition.
Streama will be ridden by regular jockey Blake Shinn and jump from barrier four with 59 kilograms on her back in the 2014 Breeders Classic this weekend.
The four-time Group 1 winner is one of a number of classy mares in the 2014 Breeders Classic final field; with the undefeated White Sage set to make her debut at Group level in the $175,000 event.
White Sage (barrier three) has been flawless in her five career starts to date and stamped herself as a Group contender with an impressive win over a strong field in the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on November 30.
Trainer John O’Shea has an extremely high opinion of the Reset mare and has races like the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m), Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on the agenda for the four-year-old.
Steps In Time (barrier six) is set to make her debut for new trainer Joseph Pride in the 2014 Breeders Classic and will be chasing her third straight victory in the Group 1 event.
The Danehill Dancer mare was unable to record a race win in three starts during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, but has made this race her own in recent years; producing brave front-running efforts in both the 2012 and 2013 editions of the race.
The majority of the 2014 Breeders Classic field will be having their first start since returning from a stint in the spelling paddock, but talented Gai Waterhouse-trained mare Driefontein has already made a winning start to her autumn preparation.
Driefontein (55kg) raced through the summer period and returned to her best form with a brave win carrying the top weight of 61kg in the 2014 Magic Millions Fillies And Mares Handicap (1300m) at the Gold Coast on January 11.
The Fastnet Rock mare is sure to appreciate the drop in weight and she will carry just 55 kilograms with Tommy Berry on her back this weekend.
Sharnee Rose recorded a shock win in the Group 3 Golden Pendant during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival and trainer Kris Lees will be hoping that she can replicate that performance in the 2014 Breeders Classic this weekend.
The Nadeem mare may need a bit of lucky after drawing the outside gate, but has generally performed well fresh throughout her racing career.
The 2014 Breeders Classic field is rounded out by Chris Waller-trained Catkins (barrier one), Magic Millions Sprint runner-up Emmalene (54kg) and Patinack Farm-owned Pretty Pins (barrier five).
