2014 Widden Stakes Final Field and Barrier Draw

The final field for the 2014 Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) has been released, with seven Fillies set to compete for the $90,000 top prize, including Alpha Miss.

Trained by Gary Nickson, Alpha Miss stamped herself as an early frontrunner for the 2014 Golden Slipper after winning the Listed Keeneland Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) on debut before closing her maiden campaign with another comfortable win in the Victory Vein Plate (1000m).

Having drawn the wide barrier (gate 7), the Lucky Owners filly will need to be on-song immediately if she is to continue her perfect career start, buy will undoubtedly be given a superb by regular jockey Jason Collett, who has been confirmed for the ride since nominations were lodged on monday.

Also carrying winning form into the 2014 Widden Stakes is Mossfun.

Trained by the renowned Team Hawkes locally at Rosehill, Mossfun began her racing career in style by claiming the Inglis Nursery Open for 2y.o. (1000m) in December, before returning to the track with a great performance in a Cranbourne barrier trial last week.

Leading trainer Gai Waterhouse will be aiming for back-to-back victories in the Widden Stakes after saddling Overreach to victory in the race’s 2013 edition, and is offered twice the chance of the repeat with Twirl and Muscovado included in acceptances.

Having lined up for only one event so far, the TAB Iphone App Plate (1000m) at Randwick, Twirl is undoubtedly Waterhouse’s best prospect in the 2014 Widden Stakes after finishing that event second behind 2014 Blue Diamond Stakes favourite Rubick.

After performing well in two barrier trials to date, Muscovado will make her debut in the juvenile fillies event and has drawn the ideal barrier three.

Trainer Gerald Ryan will saddle both Ygritte and Gimcrack Stakes third Lucky Raquie, while Peter Snowden-trained Kwinana will complete the field for the 2014 Widden Stakes.
