2014 Canonbury Stakes Final Field Released

The 2014 Listed Canonbury Stakes will run at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, with a field of eight runners set to contest the 1100m event after the final field was released this morning.

Running a strong fourth behind Law in the Listed Breeders’ Plate in October, Peter Snowden-trained Ghibellines will open his 2014 Autumn campaign in the Canonbury Stakes with a long view to a run the 2014 Group 1 Golden Slipper on April 5th having completed two successful barrier trials since returning to the track in late January.

While still a relatively inexperienced runner, Snowden believes that racing will iron out the majority of flaws in the Shamardal colt’s arsenal and is a definite chance to score a maiden victory this weekend.

Also included in the final field for the 2014 Canonbury Stakes is fellow Golden Slipper hopeful Fighting Sun.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse, Fighting Sun has widely impressed since debuting on course in December; winning two barrier trials and recording a first-up victory in the ATC Membership On Sale Plate (1100m) ahead of exciting gelding Boomwaa on January 4th.

A busy Autumn campaign is well and truly on the cards for the Northern Meteor colt, who has been confirmed as aiming at both the 2014 Golden Slipper and Group 1 Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) in April.

Waterhouse will also be represented Mr Cha Cha, who overcame an awkward jump to win his only start to date; the NBN Cannonball Feb 6th Maiden (1000m) at Wyong in January.

Having drawn the ideal barrier three, Mr Cha Cha’s cause received a huge boost earlier this week when in-form jockey Tommy Berry was confirmed for the ride.

Mr Bogart and Bachman will both make their racing debuts in the 2014 Canonbury Stakes, while Delectation, Scratch Me Lucky and Lord Beckworth complete the final field.

The 2014 Autumn carnival is now well and truly underway, and the best odds for all events can be found at Ladbrokes.com.au
