Having claimed the Listed Mornington Cup Prelude (2000m) last week, Prince Of Penzance ($3) is a leading chance heading into the 2014 Mornington Cup, however will need to be in top form if he is to overcome classy Gai Waterhouse-trained Travolta ($5).

Of a starting field of twelve, five runners currently feature at a quote of less than $10, with Laidback Larry ($4.80) He’s Your Man ($8) and Cooldini ($8.50) joining the previously mentioned favourites.

Will Prince Of Penzance continue his great start to 2014? Or will Gai gain the early Caulfield Cup berth with Travolta?

1st

Travolta ($5)

Talented stayer Travolta returned to peak form throughout his late spring/summer campaign, recording two places and two victories in five starts, which included a strong win in the Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) in January last time out. Despite finishing eighth in a field of 14 in last season’s Mornington Cup, the form currently carried by the Handsome Ransom gelding should be enough to overcome both the wide barrier and the classy field at Mornington tomorrow.

2nd

Prince Of Penzance ($3)

Having gained favouritism after his win in the Mornington Cup Prelude event last week, Prince Of Penzance also recorded a memorable summer, claiming one minor and two victories in only four starts. Following last week’s triumph, trainer Darren Weir revealed the plan to run the Pentire gelding at Mornington Cup glory had been set in place for a long time, with Caulfield Cup entry a real sweetener. Having drawn the ideal barrier three, Prince Of Penzance will almost certainly receive an ideal ride from regular jockey Michelle Payne and will be very hard to beat.

3rd

Instrumentalist ($10)

Chris Waller-trained Instrumentalist has been one of the country’s busiest horses of late, competing in nine events since October which have included three wins and three minors. Having drawn particularly well (barrier four), Instrumentalist is looking good to cause a serious threat to the race’s leaders and offers real value to punters at a current price of $10.
