Only Eight Juveniles In 2014 Widden Stakes Nominations

Overreach stamped herself as the favourite for the Golden Slipper with a victory in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m), but only eight juveniles have been included in the nominations for the 2014 edition of the race.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse will have the opportunity to claim her second straight win in the race after entering both Muscovado and Twirl in the nominations for the Group 3 event.

Big Brown filly Muscovado will be making her debut in the Widden Stakes after performing well in two barrier trials at Royal Randwick; defeating Twirl and Sheer Style in a barrier trial over 728 metres on January 3 before finishing second behind Fighting Sun over 1050 metres on January 31.

Twirl went into his racing debut in the TAB IPhone App Plate (1000m) at Royal Randwick on January 25 as the outside of the field, but performed strongly to finish three lengths behind leading Blue Diamond Stakes contender Rubick.

Rubick’s stablemate Lucky Raquie is on track to return to the races in the Widden Stakes after winning a barrier trial over 900 metres at Rosehill Gardens last Tuesday.

Lucky Raquie made his racing debut in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival and worked home fairly to finish third.

Also returning to the races for the first time since running in the Gimcrack Stakes is Darley filly Kwinana who finished fourth in the Listed event last October.

Team Hawkes-trained Mossfun made his racing debut with a narrow win over Dual Star in the Inglis Nursery (1000m) on the Randwick Kensington track on December 14 last year, while Ygritte is also taking winning form into the race after winning at Kembla Grange on debut.

The most experienced runner include in the 2014 Widden Stakes nominations is Noel Mayfield-Smith-trained Unequivocal, who has had three barrier trials and two race starts since September last year.

Unequivocal performed fairly behind Peggy Jean and Boomwaa on debut in the Inglis Classic (1200m) at Royal Randwick on January 18 and turn-the-tables on Peggy Jean in the ATC Membership On Sale Now Handicap (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on February 1.
