Ghibellines Headlines 2014 Canonbury Stakes Nominations

Exciting colt Ghibellines is set to return to the races in the Canonbury Stakes at Rosehill Gardens after being included in the nominations for the Listed event. Fighting Sun will take on Ghibellines in the Listed Canonbury Stakes at Rosehill Gardens this weekend. Photo: Steve Hart

Ghibellines, the half-brother of champion filly Guelph, made his racing debut with a fourth place finish behind Law in the Listed New South Wales Thoroughbred Breeders’ Plate at Royal Randwick on October 5 and has since performed well in two barrier trials.

Trainer Peter Snowden believes that Ghibellines has plenty of natural ability, but admitted that the son of Shamardal still had plenty of maturing to do if he is going to be competitive in a race like the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) during the 2014 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

“He’s talented, but he’s still very raw and he still does a few things wrong,” Snowden told TVN.

“Only racing will cure that.

“He’s had two trials to get him ready for this, he trialled well in both of them and he’s a big strong lad.”

Ghibellines is set to face stiff competition in the Canonbury Stakes after Golden Slipper contender Fighting Sun was also included in the nominations for the Listed event.

Fighting Sun made his racing debut with a narrow win over Black Caviar Lightning Stakes nominee Boomwaa in the ATC Membership On Sale Plate (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens on January 4 and scored another win in a barrier trial at Royal Randwick on January 31.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse has a number of talented juveniles in her stable, but has stamped the son of Northern Meteor as her leading contender for both the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on April 5 and the Group 1 Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on April 19.

Bachman, Mr Bogart and Red Bowers are all expected to make their racing debuts after being included in the Canonbury Stakes nominations, while Double Happy and Scratch Me Lucky will both be returning to the races for the first time this campaign.
