Some of the best mares in Australia are set to clash at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday after 13 classy gallopers were included in the 2014 Breeders Classic nominations.
Guy Walter won the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) with Appearance at Royal Randwick last weekend and his other star mare Streama is set to return to racing in the Breeders Classic this weekend.
Streama only had three starts during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, but did not produce a poor performance; with the classy mare claiming victory in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) and finished second in both the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m).
The Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on Saturday is another possible option for Streama, but Walter is leaning towards keeping her in Sydney for the Breeders Classic.
Another multiple Group 1 winner that is set to return to the races in the Breeders Classic this weekend is Chris Waller-trained Red Tracer.
Red Tracer recorded her maiden win at Group 1 level when she overcame a wide barrier draw to beat Streama in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) during the 2013 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival and she claimed another win at the highest level of racing when she took out the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) in the spring.
The daughter of Dane Shadow is joined in the Breeders Classic nominations by stablemates Catkins and She’s Clean, who are both owned by the famous Ingham Racing team.
Catkins took out the Group 3 Mares Sprint (1200m) and Group 3 Eliza Park International Stakes (1600m) during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival and was narrowly denied a maiden Group 1 win in the Myer Classic by Red Tracer, while She’s Clean finished her spring preparation with a fourth place finish behind the undefeated White Sage in the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m).
White Sage looks likely to be thrown in the deep end in the 2014 Breeders Classic on Saturday and will face easily the biggest challenge of her career in the Group 2 event this weekend.
The Reset mare has scored five wins from as many race starts and was most impressive in the West Tradies Handicap (1200m), Scone Cellarabrations Handicap (1350m) and Festival Stakes.
Trainer John O’Shea has included White Sage in the entries for both the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) and Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) and is confident the four-year-old is good enough to win at Group level.
Magic Millions Fillies And Mares Handicap winner Driefontein, Kris Lees-trained Sharnee Rose and talented front-runner Steps In Time have also been included in the 2014 Breeders Classic nominations.
