Earthquake Claims Blue Diamond Prelude Fillies with Ease

Pre-post favourite Earthquake has proven punters everywhere right, easily winning the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude for Fillies from Eloping and a fast-finishing Lumosty.

Having been a favourite for the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes since claiming the Colin Pearce 100th Birthday Plate (1000m) on November 9th, Earthquake has consolidated her position as one of the country’s most exciting emerging talents and has set up a highly-anticipated showdown with leading male-prospect Rubick in the major Group 1 feature on February 22nd.

Leading trainer Peter Snowden has a high opinion of the two-year-old Exceed and Excel filly, and was impressed by her ability to win despite a few minor hiccups.

“She’s got talent” Snowden said following the race.

“I was a bit surprised she wobbled a bit on the corner and he had her ears pricked and wanted to lay out a bit.

“She’s been here about three weeks now and done a lot of work this way but she’s got natural ability and she’ll take a lot from today’s run.

“The benefit of being around here will be a big plus in a fortnight.”

Despite jumping from the barriers slowly, jockey Damien Oliver was able to quickly right the run of Earthquake, immediately steering the exciting two year old to the front of the pack.

“She was just a touch awkward, just floating and not concentrating and once you give her a slap she was up on the bridle and when he gave her a squeeze she just kept coming and coming” Snowden added.

“I know for two weeks’ time there’s a little bit more left there.

“That race today has done a job for her, as it did in the trial and she won’t need any more hard work – she’s a natural athlete, she’s clean winded and she’ll take a lot from that today.”

Earthquake’s sights are now set firmly on the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes, before a possible run in the 2014 Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m).
