2014 Autumn Stakes Betting Preview and Tips

The Group 2 Hyland Race Colours Autumn Stakes is set to run at Caulfield on Saturday and while not the day’s featured event, is offering punters a particularly impressive field including previous winners at Group 1 level.

The 2014 Autumn Stakes will be the first opportunity for several notable runners to take to the track competitively and begin campaigns towards major Group 1 events, particularly the 2014 Futurity Stakes on February 22nd.

Polanski has been particularly well backed by punters in the 48 hours since markets opened, and looks almost certain to jump as favourite for the 2014 Autumn Stakes.

Can Polanski score a first-up victory on course to this Autumn’s major Group 1 events?

Polanski ($3.10)

Chasing his fourth-straight victory after completing his 2013 Spring campaign with the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) title, the three-year old commenced his 2014 preparations well, complementing his proven staying abilities with sprinting prowess at a Cranbourne barrier trial in late January. With a view to build in distance throughout the Autumn carnival, Robbie Laing has been happy with the recent work of the Rakti colt.

Thunder Fantasy ($7)

Slowly warming to the task through his 2013 Spring campaign, Thunder Fantasy followed up two early minor victories with a well-fought third behind Polanski in the Group 1 Victoria Derby. Trained by Anthony Cummings, the three-year-old son of Lucky Owners will be in with a legitimate chance of placing in the 2014 Autumn Stakes if jockey Mark Zahra can find early passage to the front from barrier three.

Carillo ($16)

Despite having his first run at group level in the 2014 Autumn Stakes, there are many strong reasons why three-year-old Carillo could cause a serious upset in the 2014 Autumn Stakes. In a short 2013 Spring campaign, the Teofilo gelding claimed the Bendigo Ford Handicap (1100m) before finishing second in his final two events; the Bayview Asphalting Handicap (1210m) and the European Auto Refinishers Maiden (1225m). Drawing the ideal barrier eight and partnered by in-form jockey Damian Browne, Carillo is currently offering excellent value to punters, particularly for a place.
