Rubick Clear Favourite for Blue Diamond Prelude – Colts & Geldings

Exciting colt Rubick has opened as clear favourite for the 2014 Blue Diamond Prelude for Colts and Geldings after an outstanding introduction to racing in January.

The two-year-old claimed favouritism for the 2014 Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (February 22nd) after his great form at a Caulfield barrier trial was consolidated by an easy victory in the TAB IPhone APP Plate (1000m) on January 30th, leaving punters to instill the son of Encosta De Lago as a $1.80 chance to continue his perfect start.

Regular jockey Brenton Avdulla will retain the ride on Rubick, who drew the ideal barrier two for the 1100m event.

Also carrying winning form into the 2014 Blue Diamond Prelude for Colts and Geldings is Mohave ($10).

Kicking off his career with a competitive second behind Law in the Listed Thoroughbred Breeders’ Plate at Randwick in October, the Exceed and Excel colt returned to racing in 2014 with a comfortable victory over Cornrow and Ducal Castle in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview for Colts and Geldings; emerging as a favourite for the Blue Diamond Stakes.

Also drawing ideally for the 2014 Blue Diamond Prelude, Mohave should receive and easier passage from the outset than fellow front-runner Nostradamus, who did not fare so well, drawing barrier 18.

Half-brother of 2010 Blue Diamond Stakes Champion Star Witness, Nostradamus justified early favouritism for the race’s 2014 edition when comfortably claiming the Nursery Plate (1100m) at Flemington in January, and evidently expected by many punters to cause a serious threat to the Blue Diamond Prelude on Saturday.

Interestingly, despite limited preparation, Wez Hunter-trained Malaguerra has been the big market mover since betting opened on Wednesday, cutting from $23 to currently sit as an $18 chance.

The Magnus colt heads into the 2014 Blue Diamond Prelude on the back of a single start; a strong victory in the John Duff & CO 2.y.o Plate at Cranbourne in January.

With the notable exceptions of Geromayo ($61), Here Comes The Boom ($61) and Stratum Star ($101), a sprinkling of wagers have already been placed on all runners to shock Rubick in Caulfield’s sixth on Saturday.
