Peter Moody-trained Moment Of Changeis a clear favourite in 2014 Orr Stakes betting markets; with punters confident that the talented sprinter can record his first win for over a year in the Group 1 event this weekend.
Moment Of Change was defeated by Richie’s Vibe as an odds-on favourite in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on January 24, but that has not stopped punters backing the son of Barely A Moment at odds of $2.40.
The five-year-old performed well at Group 1 level during his spring preparation, finishing fourth in the Moir Stakes (1200m), fourth in the Manikato Stakes (1200m), third in the VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) and second in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m), but was unable to score his first race win since he took out the 2012 Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1200m).
Moment Of Change remains favourite, but the best backed runner in 2014 Orr Stakes betting markets has been Shamus Award who is now into odds of $3.30.
Shamus Award finished his 2013 Spring Racing Carnival campaign with a memorable victory in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) and looks to have returned for an autumn preparation in excellent condition; impressing connections with a strong jump out win at Flemington last Friday.
The next best backed runner in Orr Stakes betting markets has been Team Cummings-trained Eurozone ($5.50), who will be making his weight-for-age debut in the Group 1 event.
Eurozone was sent for a stint in the spelling paddock following his win in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) and co-trainer James Cummings has been delighted with the condition of the son of Northern Meteor.
The three-year-old was also included in the nominations for the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday, but connections elected to set him for the tougher assignment.
The only other runner in Orr Stakes betting markets that is available at odds of less than $10 is Chris Waller-trained Hawkspur, who is currently available at a quote of $8.
Hawkspur is yet to record a victory from five first-up starts and has never won a race shorter than a mile, but showed a remarkable turn-of-pace when he took out the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) during his spring preparation.
Two-time Group 1 winner Foreteller ($15) and progressive stayer Sertorius ($21) have both received a sprinkling of support, while Perth galloper Playing God ($41) and John Dillion Stakes winner Finishing Card ($81) are the clear outsiders in the field.
