Headlining the Mornington Cup nominations is Darren Weir-trained Prince Of Penzance, who stamped himself as the favourite for the race with his tough win in the Listed Mornington Cup Prelude (2000m) at Caulfield on February 1.

Prince Of Penzance has worked through the grades strongly during his summer preparation and is expected to be given the opportunity of securing a start in the 2014 Caulfield Cup with a win in the Mornington Cup next Wednesday.

He’s Your Man and Laidback Larry will both have the opportunity to turn-the-tables on Prince Of Penzance after both were included in the 2014 Mornington Cup nominations.

He’s Your Man has performed well in his three starts in Australia, finishing second in the George Watston Handicap (1400m), third in the Craftsman Handicap (1720m) and fourth in the Mornington Cup Prelude (2000m), and is sure to relish the step-up to 2400 metres – a distance over which he did the majority of his racing in Europe.

Laidback Larry was well-backed in the lead-up to the Mornington Cup Prelude (2000m), but got locked in an early speed battle with He’s Your Man and faded in the final stages of the race to finish fifth.

The O’Reilly gelding had recorded dominant victories in his last four race starts before his Mornington Cup Prelude defeat and trainer Gai Waterhouse believes that the four-year-old is good enough to be a Cups Contender during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.

Laidback Larry could be joined in the Mornington Cup field by stablemate Travolta, who has returned to his best form with a string of impressive performances during his summer campaign.

Travolta broke through for his first race win in almost a year when he took out the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens on November 30 and finished an unlucky second in both the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) and Listed Tattersalls Club Cup (2400m) before returning to the winners stall in the Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) at Royal Randwick on January 25.

Other interesting stayers included in the 2014 Mornington Cup nominations are the Pat Carey-trained trio of Altonio, Angola and Durnford, veteran stayer Macedonian, Mick Moroney-trained Shenzhou Steeds and last start winner Instrumentalist.
