Price to Saddle Half Carlyon Cup Final Field

Leading trainer Mick Price looks a good chance of walking away from the 2014 Carlyon Cup with a smile after the final field for Saturday’s group 3 event at Caulfield revealed he will saddle three of the race’s six competitors.

Initially featuring a list of 14 nominations, the majority of potential runners for the Carlyon Cup elected to instead run in the day’s feature event, the Group 1 C.F Orr Stakes (1400m), opening the door for a Price stables-field domination.

While Bit Of Hell and Anagold are both given a good chance, Pakal appears most likely to return Price another Group-level crown, but will have to overcome drawing barrier six.

While only returning four wins from nineteen starts to date, the Lord Of England gelding impressed throughout the 2013 spring; claiming two victories and a minor before closing his campaign fifth behind Side Glance in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m).

Beyond the Price stables, Chase The Rainbow will attempt to build on a slow return to the track following 13 months in the spelling paddock; following up two promising barrier trials with a less-than-impressive eleventh on his competitive return in January.

Leading jockey Craig Williams will retain the ride on the Dash For Cash Gelding, having partnered the three-year-old to a minor in the Listed Equiano-John Dillon Stakes at Caulfield two weeks ago.

David Hayes-trained Bass Strait has not run competitively since the Group 3 Lexus Stakes on November 2nd, however the choice not to trial the four-year-old son of Holy Roman Emperor could prove a masterstroke considering the form shown over the back-end of his 2013 spring campaign.

Rounding out the final field for the 2014 Carlyon Cup is Star Rolling, trained by Peter Morgan and Craig Widdison out of their Widdison stables.

While yet to feature in a Group level event, the Casino Prince gelding has claimed a handy four wins from eight starts; most notably the 2013 Listed Penang Trophy at Morphettville from Let’s Make Adeal and Araldo.

Having finished behind Carlyon rival Chase the Rainbow in the Listed Equiano-John Dillion Stakes on January 25th, Star Rolling will be out to prove he can perform at his highest level yet. is currently offering a bonus bet to all new members to use on any Autumn event, including the Group 3 Carlyon Cup!
