Boban Headlines 2014 Expressway Stakes Final Field

The 2014 Expressway Stakes final field has been released; with star miler Boban set to return to racing in the Group 2 event at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Boban will be chasing his sixth straight victory this weekend in the Expressway Stakes after finishing his 2013 Spring Racing Carnival campaign undefeated; picking up impressive wins in the Group 3 Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m), the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m), Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m).

The son of Bernardini will jump from barrier one on Saturday and will be ridden by leading Sydney jockey Nash Rawiller; with regular jockey Glyn Schofield currently serving a suspension for his ride on Number One Gun at the end of last year.

Boban is joined in the 2014 Expressway Stakes final field by stablemates Moriarty and Sizzling.

Imported stayer Moriarty (barrier two) has also been included in the nominations for the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) at Caulfield on Saturday and is a chance of heading to Melbourne for the race, while Sizzling appears certain to make his debut for his new stable in the Expressway Stakes.

Sizzling (barrier 11) was previously prepared by veteran Queensland trainer Kelso Wood and performed well in both the 2012 and 2013 editions of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival; winning the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1600m) in 2012 and the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m) in 2013.

The Snitzel entire is yet to record a race win outside of Queensland and did not perform as well as expected during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival; missing the placings in the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m), Group 3 Tramway Stakes (1400m), Bill Ritchie Handicap and Epsom Handicap.

Arguably the most interesting runner in the 2014 Expressway Stakes final field is Her Majesty The Queen Of England-owned Carlton House, who will be making just his second appearance at the races since arriving in Australia over a year ago.

Carlton House made his Australian racing debut with a 13th place finish in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens in March last year and missed the entire 2013 Spring Racing Carnival due to hoof issues.

The Street Cry entire performed well in a barrier trial at Royal Randwick on January 3 and looked good when given an exhibition gallop alongside Fiorente just over a fortnight ago; with trainer Gai Waterhouse hopeful that the six-year-old can return to the form that he showed in Europe that included a second place finish behind equine superstar So You Think in the Group 1 Prince Of Wales Stakes (2011m) during the 2012 Royal Ascot meeting.

Veteran trainer Guy Walter will have two runners in the Expressway Stakes on Saturday; with Appearance and Any Day Will Do set to return to the races in the Group 2 event.

Any Day Will Do will be making her debut at Group level after finishing her spring campaign with three straight victories, while Appearance will be looking to recapture her best form after failing to fire during her spring campaign.

Speedy sprinter Rain Affair (barrier nine), Canterbury Classic runner-up Howmuchdoyouloveme (barrier six), Darley gelding Pinwheel (barrier ten), Emirates Stakes placegetter Speediness (barrier seven) and Natalie Mccall-trained River Lad (barrier eight) round out the 2014 Expressway Stakes final field.

The 2014 Expressway Stakes betting market will be available shortly and you can find the best odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.
