Two-year-old Nostradamus will be out to show his worth in this Saturday’s 2014 Blue Diamond Prelude (1400m) in a field that includes classy colt Rubick.
Having only lined up for one competitive start to date; a convincing victory in the unheralded Nursery Plate at Flemington on January 18th, the Blue Diamond Prelude will be the first real test for Nostradamus, who is already expected to produce a glittering career under the Flemington-based Hawkes Racing team.
While currently sitting on the fourth line of betting at Ladbrokes.com.au, the Medaglia D’Oro colt appears to have already formed a bond with leading jockey Glen Boss, who will again take the ride after showing his ability to comfortably guide the youngster to the lead despite a poor jump.
Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes told ninemsn that despite coming up against quality opposition, the operation has complete faith in the abilities of Nostradamus.
“He won on debut but probably didn’t meet a lot of good horses, so Saturday is going to be his test” Hawkes said.
“Right from day one he was always top of the pops. He always showed something straight off the bat. Most good horses do. “
Despite also featuring names like Mohave and Chivalry, Nostradamus’s biggest test is undoubtedly Rubick; the talented Gerald Ryan-trained colt who has so far claimed a first-up barrier trial and comfortable victory in the TAB IPhone App Plate at Randwick two weeks ago.
Of all competition, Hawkes revealed he “wouldn’t swap” his situation with Nostradamus, adding his admiration for the hyped son of Encosta De Lago “couldn’t have done any more than he had done.”
The results of the 2014 Blue Diamond Prelude will undoubtedly alter and decide the favourites for the 2014 Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes, set to run at Caulfield on February 22nd.
