Talented three-year-old Eurozone will make his 2014 debut in the Group 1 C.F Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield this Saturday following confirmation by trainer James Cummings.
Having included Eurozone in nominations for both the Orr Stakes and Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) on the same card, an impressive piece of work at Caulfield this morning has resulted in the Cummings camp awarding the Northern Meteor colt with only his second shot at Group 1 glory.
While arguably the biggest star in the Autumn Stakes nominations, Eurozone will have to produce his most comprehensive run to date if he is to triumph over such names as Moment of Change, Polanski and 2013 Cox Plate Champion Shamus Award, all of whom are also nominated for Saturday’s feature.
Cummings revealed to TVN the major reasons behind the decision, highlighting their belief in the budding colt. Speaking of the successful run this morning, Cummings said: “He’s really fit for the 1400-metres and it’s a good time for a Group 1 over 1400-metres for him.”
Despite not running competitively since his tight victory in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) on September 28, Cummings in confident Eurozone can immediately re-gather the form that has delivered four wins in only six starts to date, particularly after successful practice runs at Randwick, Flemington and Caulfield.
“He had a good sweat at Randwick that day and we brought him for a jump-out at Flemington” Cummings said.
“He did really well that day and finished hard for second in a slowly run heat.
“We thought that we would get him out of his comfort zone again this morning and bring home to Caulfield, so it hopefully won’t be as much of a graveyard for Sydney horses first-up here.
“I’m sure if we draw a good gate, he’s a fit horse and his work bodes well for Saturday and the future.”
A total of 10 horses have nominated for the 2014 C.F Orr Stakes, the first Australian Group 1 race of the 2014 calendar.
