Trainer Chris Waller has revealed that talented miler Boban will have plenty of opportunities to add to his winning run during the 2014 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
The leading trainer said last week that the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick on April 19 was on the agenda for Boban, but he told RSN this morning that he will not be saving the two-time Group 1 winner for the $4 million event.
“The problem with Boban in Sydney is that the Queen Elizabeth is run at just about the end of April and at that time the cooler weather is starting to creep in, the hours are a lot shorter and you can get wet tracks – it is as simple as that,” Waller said.
“If you set a horse for a race like that and all of a sudden you get a wet track, which is a pretty good chance, you have lost everything else during the carnival.
“I like to get them up nice and early and he is a good example.”
Boban is set to return to the races in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on February 8 and will contest the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) at the same venue a fortnight later.
The son of Bernardini will step back-up to Group 1 level for the Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm on March 8, where a possible clash with It’s A Dundeel looms, after which Waller will then reassess his options and likely head towards the Queen Elizabeth Stakes with the enigmatic four-year-old.
Boban was the star performer of the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival and finished his campaign with five wins from as many race starts.
He resumed with a win in the James McCall Retirement Handicap (1300m) at Rosehill Gardens on August 31 and stamped himself as a Group 1 contender with a dominant win in the Group 3 Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m) at Royal Randwick on September 21.
Boban recorded his maiden Group 1 win in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) with a strong finishing burst and was forced to come from the back of the field again to take out the Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on October 19.
The talented gelding started the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) as favourite and flew home late again to score his second win at Group 1 level from Smokin’ Joey and Speediness.
Waller is chasing his second straight victory in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes after winning the 2013 edition of the race with imported galloper Reliable Man.
