2014 Mornington Cup Prelude Final Field – Laidback Larry Chasing Fifth Straight Win

Progressive stayer Laidback Larry will be chasing his fifth straight win when he makes his black type racing debut in the 2014 Mornington Cup Prelude (2000m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Laidback Larry (barrier 13) finished his winter campaign with a comfortable win at Newcastle and has recorded three dominant victories since returning to the races at the end of 2013.

The O’Reilly gelding resumed with a two lengths victory in the Australian Turf Club Handicap (1580m) at Canterbury on December 18 and scored a most impressive five and a half lengths win at Royal Randwick on New Year’s Day.

Laidback Larry went into the TAB Rewards Handicap (2000m) at Royal Randwick on January 18 as an odds-on favourite and lived up to his short quote with yet another comfortable victory.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse is confident that Laidback Larry can earn a ballot-exempt start in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) by winning the Listed Mornington Cup (2400m), but he will face the toughest test of his racing career when he jumps from barrier 13 this Saturday.

Waterhouse isn’t the only Sydney trainer with a strong chance in the Mornington Cup Prelude; with Chris Waller including imported stayer He’s Your Man in the nominations for the Listed event.

He’s Your Man was competitive at the highest level of racing in England, finishing second behind Lost In The Moment in the Listed Fred Archer Stakes (2414m) and fifth in the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes (2670m), and has performed well since making his racing debut in Australia on New Year’s Day.

The Cape Cross entire finished a narrow second behind the in-form Anlon in the George Watson Handicap (1400m) and worked home fairly when third behind Eraset and Prince Of Penzance in the Craftsman Handicap (1720m).

Like Laidback Larry, the Mornington Cup is the major 2014 Melbourne Festival Of Racing target for the five-year-old; with connections hoping that he can be competitive at Group 1 level during the spring.

He’s Your Man is not the only imported stayer that has been included in the 2014 Mornington Cup Prelude final field; with Prairie Star (barrier 12) and Motivado in the field for the Listed event.

The 2014 Mornington Cup Prelude final field also features Perth-based veteran God Has Spoken, Darley mare Sindarin and consistent stayer Prince Of Penzance.
