Steps In Time will resume in the Group 2 Breeders Classic (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on February 15 after impressing in a barrier trial at Warwick Farm this morning.
The Danehill Dancer mare beat stablemate Tiger Tees and Darley gelding Pinwheel in a star-studded barrier trial over 800 metres and did enough to convince new trainer Joseph Pride that she was ready for a return to the races.
“I thought she trialled good but it might be a little deceptive because they didn’t really run fast time,” Pride told TVN.
“She looked happy striding out and I was pleased with what I saw.
“She will trial again at Warwick Farm on February 7 before resuming in the Breeders.”
Steps In Time had just three race starts during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival and was unable to record her first race win since she took out the Listed Wiggle Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm on March 9 last year.
She resumed with a solid third behind Platelet and Spirit Of Boom in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on October 5 and was fourth behind Red Tracer in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on October 19 before finishing her campaign with an eighth place finish in the Group 2 Yellowglen Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day.
Pride said that he is confident that Steps In Time is not past her best and believes that she is still good enough to be competitive in a race like the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 22.
“I don’t have much of a reference point but so far so good with her,” Pride said.
“A change of environment might be a good thing for a mare of her age.
“John O’Shea did a terrific job with her and if you look back through her form and he hasn’t made any mistakes.
“We are keeping an open mind but after speaking with her owners, the Coolmore Classic is something that is in the back of our minds.”
Steps In Time will be chasing a third straight victory in the Breeders Classic and will have the opportunity to improve on her fourth place finish behind Appearance, Red Tracer and Norzita in the 2013 edition of the Coolmore Classic.
