Mohave To Follow Traditional Path To The Blue Diamond Stakes

Trainer Peter Snowden has confirmed that Mohave will follow the traditional path to the 2014 Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) and contest the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) in a fortnight, following his victory in the Listed Blue Diamond Colts And Geldings Preview (1000m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Mohave made his racing debut with a second place finish behind Law in the Listed Thoroughbred Breeders’ Plate (1000m) at Royal Randwick on October 5 and broke through for his maiden race win with a tough victory over Cornrow and Ducal Castle on the weekend.

The Exceed And Excel colt finished strongly in the closing stages of the race and Snowden told the media that he expects the two-year-old to be even better when he gets over more ground, as he works his way through the Blue Diamond Series.

“He did a good job; he’s a professional horse and has got really good ability,” Snowden said.

“He showed at his first start in Sydney that he does most things right and he’s blessed with natural pace early which helped him today.

“He was very strong late and I’m confident that he’ll get a lot further than today’s distance; 1200 metres will be perfect for him.

“He’s been targeted at the Blue Diamond and I think come Diamond Day, provided that he runs well next start he should be there and be very competitive.”

While Mohave may have impressed Snowden with his performance, punters were not overly wrapped with the performance and the two-year-old remains a $21 chance in 2014 Blue Diamond Stakes betting markets.

Gerald Ryan-trained Rubick ($3.60) is the new favourite for the Group 1 event from Mohave’s stablemate Earthquake ($4), Team Hawkes-trained Nostradamus and Street Cry colt Chivalry ($10).
