Eloping Could Go Straight Into 2014 Blue Diamond Stakes

Classy filly Eloping may not have another run before the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) on February 22 following her impressive win in the Listed Blue Diamond Fillies Preview (1000m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Eloping made it two wins from as many starts with an impressive performance in the Blue Diamond Preview For Fillies at Caulfield on Saturday.

Eloping made her racing debut with an impressive win in the BJC Members Celebration (900m) at Bendigo on December 22 and justified the support of punters to record another impressive win on Saturday.

The daughter of Choisir was quickly taken to the lead by jockey Stephen Baster and she pulled away when asked for an extra effort to record a comfortable one-length win from Robert Smerdon-trained Lumosty and Darley filly Sakitto.

Baster has ridden Eloping in both of her race starts and said after the race that he has been impressed with the professional way that the two-year-old has handled her two race starts.

“Once she got to the front she switched off and relaxed and did it pretty easy,” Baster said.

“She got the line looking around a little bit, so she’s a nice filly on the way up.

“She’s done everything right and couldn’t do any more than she has.”

Trainer Craig Widdison admitted in the lead-up to the Blue Diamond Fillies Preview that the $2 million Magic Millions Classic (1200m) was the original target for the talented juvenile, but a hamstring issue meant that she was unable to make it to the races.

Widdison, along with training partner Peter Morgan, decided instead to set Eloping for the Blue Diamond Stakes and after Saturday’s victory revealed that she may miss the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) on February 8 and go straight into the $1 million Group 1 event.

“We’ll see how she is, but she’s a chance to go straight in,” Widdison said.

“I just think that she might not need another run.”

Eloping is now on the fifth line of 2014 Blue Diamond Stakes betting markets behind Rubick ($3.60), Earthquake ($4), Nostradamus ($9) and Chivalry ($10).

Sign-up and deposit at Ladbrokes.com.au to find betting markets for all the major races that will take place during the 2014 Melbourne Festival Of Racing and the 2014 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

New punters will receive a free bet worth up to $250 that can be used to back the winner of the Blue Diamond Stakes or any other race this autumn!
