Trainer Colin Scott has revealed that the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Royal Randwick on April 12 will be the major autumn goal for his star galloper Speediness.
Speediness stamped himself as a top-level miler during an impressive 2013 Spring Racing Carnival campaign, which included a win in the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) as well as impressive performances in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m), the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m), the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) and the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m).
Scott told Racing Victoria this morning that Speediness was set to resume in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on February 8 and will contest the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) at the same venue on February 22 and the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 29 before finishing his campaign with a run in the Doncaster Mile.
Speediness has impressed Scott with his condition since returning from the spelling paddock and said he is confident that the son of Testa Rossa can break through for a win at Group 1 level – even though he will likely face the talented Boban in the majority of his meetings.
“If he trials well on Friday at Sandown then he gets on a truck on Saturday night and he’ll hopefully be up in Sydney by Sunday morning,” Scott said.
“Unfortunately I’ve learnt that he’s likely going to run into Boban again at his first two starts this campaign but he didn’t beat us that far.
“With our main goal being the Doncaster, if we can get close to them at weight for age then he’ll suited with a good weight drop back to a handicap.
“His work so far has been right up to the mark.
“With these older horses they take a little bit of work to get back up and going but he had a nice gallop on the course proper last week and he worked outstanding.
“He’ll stay with John Thompson at Randwick which is where the majority of his races will be and without having to travel and all those sort of things I’m hoping that he might be able to win a good race up there.”
Speediness is currently available at $31 in 2014 Doncaster Mile betting markets; with Boban ($8) a narrow favourite from Ecuador ($9), White Sage ($10) and Toydini ($11).
