Gai Waterhouse-trained stayer Travolta is currently a clear favourite in 2014 Australia Day Cup betting markets; with the progressive gelding chasing his second Listed victory in the 2400 metre event.
Travolta started his summer campaign with an eighth place finish in the Wadalba Handicap (1350m) at Rosehill Gardens on November 16 before producing one of the best performances of his career to take out the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens on November 30.
The Handsome Ransom gelding was narrowly denied wins in both the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) and Listed Tattersalls Club Cup (2400m), but has still been well backed to win the Listed event at Australia Day Cup odds of $3.10.
Battling Travolta for favouritism is imported stayer Brigantin who is available at odds of $4, despite being unable to breakthrough for a win in seven starts in Australia.
Brigantin failed to fire during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, while under the care of Pat Carey, but has improved significantly since joining the stable of Chris Waller; finishing fifth in the December Handicap (1550m) at Canterbury on December 28 and second in the Listed Gosford Cup (2100m) on January 10.
Midsummer Sun defeated Brigantin in the Gosford Cup, but the Sam Kavanagh-trained gelding is still available at the lucrative Australia Day Cup odds of $6.
Kavanagh believes that he has worked out the secret to Midsummer Sun and has high hopes for the son of Monsun during the 2014 Melbourne Festival Of Racing, including him in the nominations for the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 8, but admits he needs to win this race to be any chance of being competitive at Group 1 level.
Also available at odds of $6 is I’m Imposing who missed the start in the Gosford Cup before working home strongly in the final stages of the race to finish fourth.
I’m Imposing performed well during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, finishing second behind Julienas in the Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality (2400m), and recorded a narrow win over Travolta and Destiny’s Kiss in the Summer Cup at Royal Randwick on Boxing Day.
