Leading Perth trainer Simon Miller has three runners in the field for the 2014 Miss Andretti Stakes (1200m) that will be run at Ascot on Saturday.
Leading the charge for Miller will be the resuming Roman Knows who has not been seen at the races since he scored a comfortable win in the Purcher International Batavia Sprint (1300m) at Geraldton on April 7 last year.
Roman Knows will be stepping up to Listed level for the first time since he finished fifth behind Rohan in the 2012 Belmont Guineas (1600m) and the son of Mosayter is looking to record the maiden first-up win of his career.
Hussy By Choice is also returning to the races after a lengthy stint in the spelling paddock and he impressed with a second place finish behind It’s A Merc in a barrier trial over 1000 metres at Belmont Park on January 6.
The Hussonet mare has an excellent record of five wins from 12 starts and has previously performed fairly at Group level; finishing fifth behind Fuddle Dee Duddle in the 2012 edition of the Group 3 Champion Stakes (1600m).
Rounding Miller’s chances in the 2014 Miss Andretti Stakes is experienced gelding Bombora who will need to improve on the form he has shown so far this preparation to have any chance of recording his maiden win at Listed level.
Bombora resumed with a fourth place finish behind The Rising in the Group 3 Reeves Stakes (1100m) at Ascot on November 5 and was far from disgraced when fourth in the Crown Perth Sprint (1000m) at Ascot on November 30.
The Tiger Hill gelding failed to fire in the Dale Alcock Difference Handicap (1200m) at Ascot on December 14 and was first behind Thunderluv’n in the Golden Group Handicap (1200m) at Ascot on Perth Cup Day.
Standing in the way of Miller’s three runners is Bunbury-based Waterman’s Bay who has performed well without breaking through for a victory this preparation.
Waterman’s Bay performed fairly in the Listed Birthday Stakes (1200m), the Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes (1200m) and the Reeves Stakes before producing one of the best performances of his career when third behind Buffering and Moment Of Change in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m).
The Eternity Range gelding was unable to back that performance up in the Group 3 Scahill Stakes (1400m) before returning to a semblance of his best form with a fourth place finish behind Dueton in the Listed Scenic Blast Stakes.
