The 2014 Australia Day Cup final field has been released; with eight stayers set to contest the Listed 2400 metre event at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
Headlining the 2014 Australia Day Cup final field is Midsummer Sun who is chasing his second straight victory after recording a narrow win over Brigantin and Destiny’s Kiss in the Listed Gosford Cup (2100m) on January 10.
Midsummer Sun will be stepping up to 2400 metres for the third time since arriving in Australia at the start of last year, finishing 12th in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) and fourth in the Group 2 Zipping Classic (2400m) and trainer Sam Kavanagh is confident that the Monsun gelding will handle the step-up in distance.
“He ran a good race when fourth in the Zipping Classic which was on a leaderish track that day,” Kavanagh told AAP.
“His other run at the distance here was in the Brisbane Cup and he came out of that with a slight respiratory issue, but I think I’ve worked out the best way to train him now.
“It seems to work giving him two or three races then a four week break so we’ll stick to that pattern.
“He is the healthiest I’ve had him since he’s been here and ready for the 2400 metres.”
Also stepping back up to 2400 metres for the first time this preparation is Chris Waller-trained Brigantin who finished second behind Midsummer Sun in the Gosford Cup.
Brigantin resumed with a fifth place finish behind Messene in the December Handicap (1550m) at Canterbury on December 28 but has done the majority of his racing in Australia over 2400 metres; finishing third in the 2012 Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m), eighth in the Listed 2013 Ansett Classic, 12th in the Listed The Bart Cummings (2520m) and seventh in the Geelong Cup 2400m.
His stablemate I’m Imposing is also backing up from the Gosford Cup and will be having his third start over 2400 metres in Australia.
I’m Imposing finished second behind Julienas in the Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens on September 28 and was far from disgraced when seventh behind Seville in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Royal Randwick on October 5.
Gai Waterhouse has both Travolta and Rule Book in the 2014 Australia Day Cup final field; with the leading trainer hopeful that Travolta can go one better after finishing second behind Shadows In The Sun in the 2013 edition of the race.
Travolta started his summer campaign with an eighth place finish in the Wadalba Handicap (1350m) at Rosehill Gardens on November 16, but bounced back to his best form with a win in the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) before finishing second in both the Group 3 Summer Cup and Listed Tattersalls Club Cup (2400m).
