Arinosa Could Return In 2014 Newmarket Handicap

Trainer Chris Waller has revealed that talented mare Arinosa could return to racing in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 8.

Arinosa was given a quiet trial over 900 metres at Royal Randwick this morning, along with classy stablemates Red Tracer, Boban, Catkins and Moriarty, and Waller said that he was happy with the performance of the Dash For Cash mare.

Waller told TVN this morning that the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 22 was the major 2014 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival goal for Arinosa, but said he is unsure what races the five-year-old will target in the lead-up to the $600,000 race.

Arinosa was included in the Newmarket Handicap nominations, which were released by Racing Victoria this afternoon, and Waller said that a first-up tilt at the Group 1 event was not out of the question – despite the fact that no horse has won the race first-up since Polycrates all the way back in 1917.

“We are in the position where we have some nice mares and trying to split them up,” Waller said.

“I’m half keen to go to the Newmarket, depending on the nominations when they come out today.

“I know the Coolmore is probably the perfect race for her later in the campaign.

“It is not ideal going to a race like the Newmarket first-up and then coming back but it is a possibility.”

Arinosa stamped herself as mare capable of racing at the highest level during an impressive 2013 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival campaign; winning the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens (1200m) and the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick.

The talented mare started her 2013 Spring Racing Carnival campaign with a fast-finishing win over Dystopia and Famous Seamus in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on October 5, but failed to fire when making her debut at Group 1 level in the Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on October 25 before returning to her best form with a second place finish in the Group 3 Lavazza Short Black (1400m) on Melbourne Cup Day.
