2014 Kensington Stakes Results – General Truce Holds On For Tough Win

General Truce returned to the races with a tough victory in the Listed 2014 Kensington Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on Saturday.

General Truce was settled in the middle of the field by Andrew Mallyon and tracked into the race nicely before showing an impressive turn-of-foot to hit the lead with 200 metres left to run.

Tony McEvoy-trained Pocket Rockets and well-backed favourite Kaiser Sun both worked home strongly in the final stages of the race, but were not able to catch General Truce who hung on to record his first win since he took out the Group 3 McKay Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville in April last year.

Maund has always a high opinion of General Truce, who won the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate as a three-year-old, and believes that the son of Brief Truce can be competitive at the highest level of racing during the 2014 Melbourne Festival Of Racing.

“I’ll set him for the Lightning Stakes and Oakleigh Plate, keep him fresh,” Maund said.

“Then we may go back for another crack at the Group 3 McKay Stakes (1100m) and Group 1 Goodwood Handicap (1200m) in Adelaide.”

General Truce was available at odds of $15 in 2014 Kensington Stakes betting markets on Saturday, but Maund said that he was confident that the six-year-old was an excellent winning chance heading into the Listed event.

“We just keep him happy and fresh and he loves the straight here at Flemington so I though he had a pretty good chance,” Maund said.

“He is a good horse and he is always under the radar.

“The barrier was a query but Andrew Mallyon rode him perfectly.”

The connections of Pocket Rockets and Kaiser Sun were both happy with their charges efforts and, like General Truce, they are expected to step-up to Group level as they get further into their autumn campaigns.

General Truce will be having his sixth start in a Group 1 race when he contests the Lightning Stakes after previously running in the 2010 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m), 2010 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m), 2011 Oakleigh Plate (1100m), 2013 The Goodwood (1200m) and 2013 Moir Stakes (1200m).
