Mornington Cup On The Agenda For Epingle

Epingle will continue her preparations for the Listed Mornington Cup (2400m) when she contests the Piping Lane Handicap (2000m) at Flemington on Saturday.

Epingle narrowly missed out on recording a maiden win at Group level when she finished second behind Sertorius in the Zipping Classic during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.

Epingle has performed well at Group level since returning to the races during the 2013 Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, but has been unable to breakthrough for the first victory of her preparation.

The Pins mare resumed with a poor performance in the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1410m) at Flemington on October 5 before returning to her best form with a fourth place finish in the Group 3 Eliza Park International Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day.

Epingle had no luck when trapped wide during the Group 2 Momentum Energy Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Emirates Stakes Day and produced one of the best performances of her career when second behind Sertorius in the Group 2 Zipping Classic (2400m) at Caulfield a week later.

The six-year-old was given a brief freshen-up and failed to fire in the Listed Lord Stakes (1600m) at Mornington on December 29.

Trainer Mick Kent is confident that Epingle can return to the winners’ stall in the Piping Lane Handicap this weekend and confirmed that the talented mare would press on to the Listed Mornington Cup Prelude (2000m) at Caulfield on February 1 and the Mornington Cup (24000m) on February 12.

“Brad (Rawiller) said she just warmed up over the last fifty metres,” Kent told Racing Ahead about Epingle’s performance in the Lord Stakes.

“I thought it was a good chance for her to get a little Stakes win next to her name but they walked mid-race and she was back in the field on the fence and had to let them all go first.

“I was happy enough with the run in the end.

“She’ll head to the Mornington Cup Prelude at Caulfield and then on to the Mornington Cup all being well.”

Epingle is currently on the third line of 2014 Piping Lane Handicap betting markets, at odds of $6, behind Warrnambool-based imported stayer Inititator ($3.30) and Chris Waller-trained Index Linked ($3.50).
