Leading Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman is confident that Boomwaa can return to the winners stall in the $250,000 Inglis Classic (1200m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
Boomwaa made his racing debut with a third place finish in the Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on October 5 and finished fourth in the Inglis Banner (1000m) at Moonee Valley on October 26, before recording his maiden race win with a most impressive performance in the Group 3 Maribyrnong Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day.
The Mutawaajid gelding returned to the races with a narrow second behind leading Golden Slipper contender Fighting Sun in the ATC Membership On Sale Plate (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens on January 4.
Bowman did not ride Boomwaa in his racing return, but partnered the two-year-old in trackwork this morning and was very happy with the feel he received from the Blue Diamond Stakes hopeful.
“He was a bit lost on his own and he went much better with a mate,” Bowman told AAP this morning.
“I wasn’t there to break any records, I just wanted him to do a nice piece of work.
“I certainly took a lot more confidence out of that work on Tuesday than his gallop on his own, although he only went evens on his own anyway.”
Bowman will be riding Boomwaa for the first time in a race on Saturday, but said that he has already been impressed by the strong, physical presence of the gelding.
“He’s a very physically developed two-year-old and he is a lovely horse,” Bowman said.
“Although I didn’t ride him first-up, I’m sure he will take good improvement fitness-wise from that.
“He went into that without a trial, so I’m pleased with where he’s at.”
Bowman has formed a strong professional partnership with trainer Robbie Laing in recent times after winning the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) on the veteran trainer’s star galloper Polanski and will partner the impressive stayer during his 2014 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival campaign, which will include a tilt at the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m).
