2014 Magic Millions Classic Results – Unencumbered Too Good For His Rivals

Pre-race favourite Unencumbered was far too good for his rivals in the 2014 Magic Millions Classic; producing another professional performance to give jockey Nathan Berry and trainer Bjorn Baker the biggest wins of their careers at the Gold Coast this afternoon.

Baker has praised Unencumbered for his professionalism since he made his debut in October of last year and the maturity of the two-year-old was on display once again this afternoon.

Berry got Unencumbered in a lovely position just off the pace in the early stages of the race and the son of Testa Rossa travelled comfortably before finishing over the top of a brave Oakleigh Girl to record a comfortable victory.

Baker maintained throughout the lead-up to the Magic Millions Classic that Unencumbered was the horse to beat, despite already having had five race starts during her juvenile campaign, and was clearly over-the-moon with the result.

“It is my biggest win by a mile and it is a dream come true,” Baker said after the race.

“I came and worked for the Wakeful Stud when I was at university fifteen years ago and I came to the public stand here and backed Testa Rossa (the sire of Unencumbered) and he won by five.

“It is amazing how things work out and it is huge for Nathan and it is huge for me.

“There are three words – attitude, attitude and attitude – and that is what Nathan Berry has got and that is why he will go to the top.”

Nathan Berry has been in the shadow of his twin brother Tommy for the majority of his career, but has stepped out of the shadows to produce a string of impressive rides on Unencumbered.

The rising jockey will start a stint in Singapore in the next few weeks and said that he was delighted to be heading to a new racing environment with a feature race win under his belt.

“All the hard work that I have put in has finally shown dividends today,” Berry said.

“He is just the ultimate race horse, he is a ten-year-old now, and he is just so calm, cool and relaxed.

“I said to the pony bloke that there is no horse I would rather be on right now, he is just such a lovely horse.

“Without Mum and Dad’s grounding and without Whitney (fiancé Whitney Schofield) being by my side for so long I wouldn’t be where I am today.

“I will go to Singapore now and come back a better man.”
