Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
This Saturday, January 11, a field of promising young two-year-olds will take to the Gold Coast track in Queensland for a shot at the 2014 Magic Millions Classic – tips and betting selections for which can be found below.
The capacity 16-starter field for this year’s $1.9 million Jeep $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) had its first scratching yesterday with Mick Price withdrawing Nordic Empire.
That paved the way for the first emergency, Sagatona, to make the field for Brisbane trainer Liam Birchely.
Remaining steady at the top of the Magic Millions Classic odds meanwhile is the Bjorn Baker-trained Unencumbered shooting for their fifth win at career start number six.
Currently paying $3.70 to salute for the punters, the Testa Rossa colt came up trumps with barrier three for the weekend and comes off a Group 3 win in the BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200m) at Doomben a fortnight ago.
Before that they took out the Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic in Sydney making them the horse to beat again in the Gold Coast’s lucrative feature.
The two other single figure fancies in the Magic Millions Classic markets are then Invisible ($5.50 coming off a winning debut at Canterbury and market mover Oakleigh Girl ($8.50) who has won two stakes races already including a Group 3 on Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington.
So are these three under $10 the ones to lock into your Magic Millions Classic trifecta?
Or is there value to be had further down the markets from a double figure chance such as Stroak ($12), Sagatonia ($12) now they’re in the mix, Price’s remaining chance Geromayo ($13) who ran second in the Wyong MM Classic or the rails-drawn Cyclone ($13) for Gai Waterhouse?
#1 Unencumbered ($3.70)
Looking at the form on this horse it’s hard to go past the favourite. They’ve got the race experience and the ultra-consistent record to deserve their top spot in the markets. Only beaten once in their five start career to date, and that was by under a length when third, won their past three straight including a Group 3 over this distance in Brisbane. Gun gate three draw, perfectly timed lead-up, think they’ll be hard to hold out even in this big field.
#13 Stroak ($12)
Bryan Guy-trained filly has the local advantage here being trained at the Gold Coast, although this is her first official start at the track. Back-to-back wins in her opening two career starts at Doomben caught the eye, then was beaten just a long neck by Unencumbered in the BJ McLachlann, tipping the same quinella as that day here with Stroak coming home strong.
#3 I Am The General ($16)
Adds value to the trifecta here, out wide (barrier 15 possibly into 13) but still rate them a danger. Debuted when third in the Magic Millions Clockwise Classic at Ballarat in November, went on to win their next start in mid-December at Flemington. Step up in distance here which should suit, also races outside of Victoria for the first time but wouldn’t be discounting them just yet based on what we’ve seen so far.
