One of the major support races of Gold Coast Magic Millions Race Day this weekend, the Magic Millions Cup 2014 is shaping up as a cracking showdown.
Running as 7 at 4:20pm (local) as the penultimate event on the card on Saturday, the $328,000 Avmin Air Charter Specialists Magic Millions Cup (1400m) features a final field of 13 hopefuls.
Five of those are under double figures in the latest Magic Millions Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au including the $3.60 favourite Velrosso.
Chris Waller’s Sydney raider last ran on December 20 at Randwick’s Kensington track where they resumed with a first-up fifth over an unsuitable 1000m.
They go up in distance here and will be fitter for the run, but still not sure if they’re ready for this the way the bookies are touting.
The next best in betting are then local General Nediym four-year-old General Exhibit ($5) who comes off a Doomben win from a fortnight ago and progressive grey The White Hope ($5.50) who has a top record at the distance.
Also under $10 are then the Kent Fleming-trained George Moore Stakes winner Lucky Hussler ($7) and Club Command ($9) resuming here not having raced since the winter.
So should you stick to the shorties in the market for your Magic Millions Cup betting this year?
Or can roughie punters clean up with a galloper like the Tony Gollan-trained Goldmarket Handicap runner-up Gundy Son ($19) or Not A Single Doubt mare Doubtfilly ($21) set to shake things up?
#2 Lucky Hussler ($7)
Think this is a nice price for Kent Fleming’s local Husson four-year-old. Failed here 12 months ago when 11th in the MM Guineas but chance to improve. Gets the blinkers back on to help sharpen them up here after a last start fourth in the Lough Neagh Stakes (1350m) in Brisbane two weeks back. Before that won first-up in the Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m) and with form up to a mile think third-up they’ll be ready to strike.
#3 Club Command ($9)
Peter Moody’s interstate raider is out in barrier 11 but room to overcome. They’re first-up here but has genuine claims following some nice form last time in during winter in Melbourne. Won over 1410m at Flemington last start (June) and their first-up record is outstanding. Two nice trials (albeit only over 740 and 727m) in Sydney more recently also suggest they’re ready to go.
#8 General Exhibit ($5)
Should get the run of the race from barrier five, local General Nediym four-year-old in flying form with a first-up second followed by their Doomben win when disappointed for a run on December 21. Improve off that as they go up in distance, but need to handle the 1400m after finishing second last in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas at their last look at these metres.
