Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2014 Field – Unencumbered One to Beat

Deserving favourite Unencumbered looks the one to beat in the 2014 Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast this Saturday, January 11, following the release of the final field for the lucrative juvenile’s feature.

Set to run as the Gold Coast Race 6 at 3:35pm (local time) on Saturday, this year’s Jeep $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) has drawn a capacity field of 16 starters plus five emergency runners lying in wait.

Heading the field to wear the number one saddlecloth is the horse that’s dominated Magic Millions Classic betting over the past month, Bjorn Baker’s flying Testa Rossa colt Unencumbered.

A winner of four of their five career starts, on Saturday they’ll be after their fourth on the trot.

Their two most recent runs have been the perfect lead up to the weekend’s major too.

They stole the show at Wyong winning Sydney’s edition of the Magic Millions Classic over 1100m before stepping up to the 1200m for the first time at Doomben to narrowly beat them home in the Group 2 BJ McLachlan Stakes.

BJ McLachlan runner-up Stroak and the third placed Sagatona are also set to back-up in the Magic Millions, both looking to turn the tables on their last start conqueror.

Local Bryan Guy-trained Stroak suffered their first loss in the McLachlan following two opening career victories also at Doomben in October and early December.

Liam Birchley’s Real Saga filly Sagatonia meanwhile was less than three quarters of a length off the winner last start, her best run in a three start career to date.

Second elect for the Magic Millions Classic win trailing only Unencumbered at the bookies meanwhile is the Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes-trained Invisible.

The first Magic Millions Classic runner for the family training team as far as any of them can recall, Invisible will be ridden by James McDonald as they look to retain their undefeated status following a debut win at Canterbury last month.

The Hawkes are hoping for a good barrier at tomorrow’s draw, Invisible best placed in gates six to eight.

Also high up the bookies Magic Millions Classic order this year are the likes of the Mick Price-trained Nordic Empire who was third behind Invisible at Canterbury on December 28 and their stablemate Geromayo.

Stephen Baster jumps on Nordic Empire for the first time with Melbourne Cup winning jockey Damien Oliver, aboard for their two career openers, swapping over to Charge Forward colt Geromayo on Saturday.

Fifth on debut behind Moonlight Hussler in the Inglis Debutant Stakes back in October with Hugh Bowman aboard, Geromayo has had Baster in the saddle for their last two runs both where they ran second.

The first was behind Sheer Style in the Magic Millions Clockwise Classic at Ballarat in the wet on November 24 followed by their second in the Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic on December 19.

Other notable hopes then include Mornington galloper I Am The General coming off a Flemington win, one time favourite Oakleigh Girl who won stakes races at Flemington and then Doomben before her BJ McLachlan fourth, undefeated Sunshine Coast-based Celestial Dragon and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Cyclone.
