Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Despite her weekend win on the Gold Coast, Darren Bell’s smart filly Navelina will not press onto this Saturday’s Magic Millions Guineas instead being spelled ahead of a Queensland Oaks 2014 campaign in the winter.
The Duke Of Marmalade three-year-old ran the ideal lead-up to the $1 million Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) when taking out the $50,000 GCTC Ladies Day QTIS Three-Years-Old Handicap (1800m) at the track over the weekend.
In her first win since March last year, Navelina thrived with her 52.5kg lightweight thanks to a two kilo claim from apprentice hoop Priscilla Schmidt.
Improving on a close last start third over 1400m, and obviously appreciating the step up to 1800m for the first time, the filly was able to win by a long neck over Hot Saga ($21).
Toby Edmonds’ $4.40 fancy Our Zidane then finish off the close trifecta the same distance away again in third.
While it looked the perfect prep run for a shot at the 2014 Magic Millions Guineas in seven days’ time, their Deagon-based trainer Bell ruled out the back-up instead sending Navelina straight to the paddock.
Her Gold Coast Ladies Day Handicap win pushed her career earnings to over $125,100 in prize money, enough for her to have snuck into the Magic Millions Guineas field too.
Bell though plans to bring Navelina back at the end of the autumn ahead of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
There her major aim will be the $400,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) at Eagle Farm Racecourse on May 31.
Early fancies for the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas meanwhile are the Gai Waterhouse-trained Wyong Magic Millions 3YO Winner Sweet Idea and the flying Sunshine Coast-based Stratum filly Enquare having won their past four on the trot in Brisbane.
The 2014 Magic Millions Guineas field, along with that for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic, are due for release later today.
