One of two majors on the Gold Coast Magic Millions Race Day along with the $2 million MM 2YO Classic, there are 16 confirmed starters plus five emergencies that just missed out on an official spot in this year’s $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m).

Early favourite of those hopefuls comes from the Sydney stables of Gai Waterhouse, Snitzel filly Sweet Idea to be ridden by Kiwi expat James McDonald.

McDonald retains the ride having been aboard the three time winner, second behind Real Surreal in the Magic Millions Classic 12 months ago, for her first-up victory in the Wyong Magic Millions 3YO Stakes over 1200m on December 19.

She had the inside alley for that run and Waterhouse will be eager for Sweet Idea, also a nice third behind stablemate Overreach in the iconic Golden Slipper as a two-year-old last autumn, to drawn a nice gate when the Magic Millions Guineas barrier draw is conducted Tuesday morning.

Waterhouse will also be represented in the field by her Northern Meteor filly Northern Glory who is also second-up this weekend having run fourth upon their return at Rosehill on December 21.

Enquare is then the next best in betting, Jason McLachlan’s flying Sunshine Coast-based hopeful shooting for their fourth straight win this prep and their fifth on the trot.

The Stratum filly is already triple stakes winner and rose in class last time out at Doomben on December 28 to beat them home in the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1350m) where they overcame a double digit gate to win.

Also coming off a last start win are the likes of the David Hayes-trained Gracious Prospect who won at Flemington over 1420m last month, Sebring filly Bring A Ring for Tony McEvoy and Sydney’s Estonian Princess who saluted over the distance at Randwick on New Year’s Day.

Other notable hopes include Robert Smerdon’s Salute To Jude out to atone for their 10th in the Bat Out of Hell at the track last Saturday over an unsuitable 900m, the Peter Moody-trained Weinholt who ran a nice first-up second to Sweet Idea in the Wyong MM 3YO Stakes, Liam Birchley’s Group 3 winning filly Missy Longstocking coming off a Vo Rogue third and Murwillumbah-based Jet Spur filly Splendora in top form this spring – summer season.

The bookies also have a high opinion of two of the five emergencies with Gillian Heinrich’s local Oratoria filly Shiraz Attack (2nd emergency) the fourth favourite in betting following their close Vo Rogue fourth and the Tony Gollan-trained Gundy Son not far behind also at single figures who is on the short back-up after their fourth to Trombone Alley in the Listed Goldmarket Handicap (1300m) at the track last Saturday.
