One of three black types on the Gosford race card for the January 10 race day, this year’s $125,000 Listed Gosford Gold Cup (2100m) has attracted a dozen early entries.

The top rated hope comes from the stables of Gai Waterhouse who has nominated the out-of-form Western Symbol, the High Chaparral seven-year-old with improving to do if they are to be competitive here.

Chris Waller has then nominated for the second top rated chance, the American bred import Brigantin who is second up following a fifth on return over 1550m at Canterbury on December 28 in their first run since being transferred from the care of pat Carey.

Waller though has also entered one of the more in-form Gosford Gold Cup hopes in his last start winner I’m Imposing.

The Danehill Dancer eight-year-old held on in a tight finish at Randwick on Boxing Day to beat home the better fancied Travolta in the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) and now seeks back-to-back black types.

The triple Sydney trainer’s premiership winning Waller vies for back-to-back Gosford Cup wins too following the success of his multiple Group champ Morairty 12 months ago who came off a win in the Listed Tattersalls Club Cup (2000m) nine days earlier.

Also coming off a win this year is then John Steinmetz’s Spartacus five-year-old Roaming Around who took out the Mayors Cup (2100m) here on New Year’s Eve.

Other notable hopes with a nice Gosford Cup lead-up include the Joe Pride-trained Destiny’s Kiss who ran third in the Summer Cup before their last start third to Permit in the Listed Tattersalls Club Cup (2400m) on New Year’s Day and Solemn.

Peter Snowden’s Bernardini four-year-old Solemn won back-to-back races at Randwick’s Kensington track before their last start failure which their trainer is urging punters to forget.

In the Summer Cup Solemn ran dead last beaten 17 lengths, just when connections thought they’d gotten the 2013 Australian Derby failure back on track.

The ground was officially a Dead (5) that day, but they didn’t handle it and Snowden is confident he can bounce back on a firmer track this week.
