Permit Back to Form with 2014 Tattersall’s Club Cup Win

Chris Waller’s rising eight-year-old Permit continued their recent form return on New Year’s Day with a win in the Tattersall’s Club Cup 2014 at Royal Randwick in Sydney.

The Dansili veteran broke a 19-month winning drought a fortnight ago when saluting in the Listed Christmas Cup (2400m) at Randwick’s Kensington track on December 14.

That good form continued on Wednesday when Blake Shinn guided them to a narrow win in the $100,000 Listed Tattersall’s Club Cup (2400m).

Going out as an $11 chance carrying 58.5kg, one and a half kilos more than their Christmas Cup winning weight, Permit handled the pressure and was able to defeat two better fancied rivals in the Tattersall’s Club Cup trifecta.

A long neck away in second was the Gai Waterhouse-trained Travolta ($3.20), the ATC Cup winning Handsome Ransom gelding coming off a Summer Cup second to I’m Imposing from Boxing Day.

Third place then belonged to Joe Pride’s $2.10 favourite Destiny’s Kiss, far from disgraced crossing only a half length off Permit after working from the back of the field, the Power Of Destiny gelding also repeating their Summer Cup placing having finished third there too.

Travolta looked the winner on Wednesday tearing away to lead over the closing stages, a performance that would’ve seen them atone for their Boxing Day defeat when run down in the Group 3 Summer Cup.

However for the second time on the trot the galloper got caught, Permit working hard to gun them down and steal the show on January 1.

“He just keeps rolling and doesn’t give in,” Waller said of his winning galloper post-race.

“It was a classic English staying race and I guess you can say he just outstayed them.

“You could say he had a pacemaker out in front which kept giving him something to chase. It didn’t fall off at the 400-metre mark and it kept him honest all the way to the line.

“’He’s just a perfect gentleman [in the stables].

“We don’t have a stable pony – we’re one of the few stables that don’t – but he might be putting his hand up one day.”

It was Waller’s second Tattersall’s Club Cup win in as many years too following the success of Moriarty last January who went on to win the Listed Gosford Cup (2100m) nine days later.

Jockey Shinn was quick to credit the trainer after his victory this year with the revived Permit.

“You’ve just got to take your hat off to Chris. [Permit] has got that spark back in him,” he said.

“A couple of preparations ago he took all before him in the staying ranks and he might win a really good race this autumn over a staying distance.

“We found a great rhythm and when it got into a dogfight he was there for me [today].”

There is now a chance Waller will run Permit on January 25 over the same track and distance in the $100,000 Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) where they would shoot for their third straight stakes success.

But Waller has ruled out a Group 1 target during the autumn at this stage.

”We won’t be setting him for The BMW or anything like that during the carnival, we’ll just take one race at a time,” the master horseman told the Sydney Morning Herald on Wednesday.

“[I’ll] try to talk the handicapper into not giving him too much weight. He has done his job, but what do you do? Do you wait and he might come back and find it tough? Or there’s the Australia Day Cup over 2400 metres, where we might have a few going for that.”
