Jim Taylor’s sprint specialist Magnifisio made it three on the trot this Perth Summer Racing Carnival with a New Year’s Day win in the 2014 Summer Scorcher at Ascot.
One of the major support races on the Perth Cup Day program, the $100,000 Listed Schweppes Summer Scorcher (1000m) was, in the end, an easy kill for Magnus mare Magnifisio.
The ultra-consistent four-year-old had run top three in all eight of her latest starts including back-to-back Ascot wins in December.
The first of those was a three length effort over 1200m before she dropped back in distance to take out the Listed RS Crawford Stakes (1000m) by one and a half lengths just seven days later.
On Wednesday she continued the winning streak saluting as the three dollar favourite to win the Summer Scorcher by two and three quarter lengths over the Grant Williams-trained second elect Shining Knight ($3.40), who came home late from the back of the pack, coming off a win over 1200m at the track from December 21.
The bookies had the order of the competitors spot on for the Summer Scorcher trifecta too with $5.50 third favourite Dueton, also third in the Crawford Stakes behind Magnifisio, rounding out the top three in a blanket finish with Shining Knight.
Magnifisio was again ridden by Jason Brown who was aboard for her Crawford Stakes victory when replacing the mare’s other regular jockey Chris Parnham.
Brown gave the winner a perfectly timed ride on Wednesday too, Magnifisio jumping from the inside alley to settle just off the early leaders Highly Toxic and Beach Express.
It was a riding tactic Brown had discussed with Taylor, the two having planned to catch a ride off the fast tempo and bide their time.
“She probably got away from me a bit at her first start, but I increased her workload and she has improved,” Taylor told The West Australian.
“We discussed during the week that we would get her off the fence and take a sit. It turned out to be a winning move.”
After moving their way up around the front runners the mare pulled out her sharp turn of foot and pulled away to win by a growing margin that paid for her Bullsbrook trainer’s hard work.
“Good horses take hard work and she has and this is the result,” Taylor told the media post-win.
While the form is spot on for Taylor to continue shooting for a black type trifecta in the $100,000 Listed Scenic Blast Stakes (1100m) Saturday week, he won’t be backing Magnifisio up.
