Black Tycoon Wins Perth Cup 2014 – Results

Veteran galloper Black Tycoon has defied their age to salute as the punters’ pick in the 2014 Perth Cup on New Year’s Day at Ascot Racecourse.

Justin Warwick’s rising nine-year-old Blackfriars gelding went out as the $5 top pick in Wednesday’s $500,000 Group 2 Golden River Developments Perth Cup (2400m) and held on in a narrow finish to take out the trophy thanks to an ace ride from 2013 Melbourne Cup winning jockey Damien Oliver who returned home to WA for the ride.

Winner of the Tattersall’s Cup back in November, the evergreen stayer improved on their last start fourth to gun three-year-old Ihtsahymn in the Group 2 CB Cox Stakes (2100m) relishing the step up in distance for the Cup.

They also relished a drop back from 59kg there under weight-for-age to just 55.5kg.

It was far from smooth sailing for Black Tycoon and Oliver however in the final stages, the duo caught in the second half of the field heading into the home straight after having gotten a nice run early.

Oliver didn’t panic though, biding his time until a gap opened up near the inside which they snuck through to storm home.

“He had a nice run in the race but they did stack up on the turn and I didn’t really have anywhere to go,” Oliver told The West Australian on Wednesday.

“As soon as the runs started to come, he really forced his way through and had a big finish on him.”

After a gutsy run on the line Black Tycoon ($5) had just a long neck to spare over Neville Parnham’s $61 outsider God Has Spoken.

The Perth Cup second from Blackfriars seven-year-old God Has Spoken was a massive improvement on their recent runs including an 11th in the Cox Stakes.

It was also a far better Perth Cup result than their dead last finish when 16th to Talent Show 12 months ago.

Finishing off this year’s winning Perth Cup trifecta just a length off the winner was then another double figure roughie in the Fred Kersley-trained Ask Me Nicely ($41), the New Zealand-bred grey in their black type debut at career start number 55.

Oliver celebrated his third Melbourne Cup trophy this spring just gone, and the Perth Cup victory was also not his first as he previously won the race back in 2008 with Cats Fun.

“It’s always great to come home and win the home town Cup,” he said.

“It’s a huge through, it’s up there with the Melbourne Cup.”

In a brilliant start to the New Year, Oliver also celebrated two other winning rides on Perth Cup Day including aboard Elite Belle in the $100,000 Listed La Trice Classic (1800m) for fillies and mares.
