This Boxing Day the racing action is top class in Sydney with a Royal Randwick meet headlined by the 2013 Summer Cup, betting tips and selections from the Races.com.au team for which are listed below.
Twelve stayers remain in contention for this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) the favourite of which is the Gai Waterhouse top-weight Travolta.
Set to carry 59kg from gate three, the Handsome Ransom five-year-old goes up from 56kg which they carried to victory last start in the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) to 59kg here.
They also have a jockey change with Tommy Berry to be replaced by Adam Hyeronimus but the bookies still rate them as the horse to beat.
Travolta pays $3.60 in the latest Summer Cup odds and is followed in the markets by three other hopefuls under $10.
Next best in betting are then Peter Snowden’s in-form galloper Solemn ($4.80) after their third on the trot, Destiny’s Kiss ($6) out to atone for a luckless run in the Villiers Stakes and ATC Cup runner-up Hoylonny ($8.50).
So are these gallopers the ones to beat? Or is there value further down the markets from a horse like Monton ($16) who steps up in distance after a good fourth in the Group 2 Villiers over 1550m two weeks ago?
#12 Solemn ($4.80)
Second best in betting but think they can get the better of the favourite. Snowden’s four-year-old is on the improve after winning their past two at Kensington, the latest on December 7 over 1800m, they did that from gate 10 carrying 56kg and although this is a notable class rise they’ve drawn ideally in gate two and drop back to 54kg, big weight advantage over Travolta carrying 59kg, need to handle the distance which they failed over three times during the autumn but two of those were in Group 1 company and they’ve matured since, before that they won over 2200m in the Geelong Classic in October 2012 so if they can tap into that again they’re a big chance
#5 Midsummer Sun ($11)
Sam Kavanagh’s imported Monsun gelding is fresh here after a six week break before which they were fourth in the Zipping Classic over the mile and a half in Melbourne, the run before they were second over 1800m at Flemington and the 2000m looks their right distance as they won over it at Caulfield during the winter, their form is hit and miss but on their day has the potential to be a good horse
#1 Travolta ($3.60)
They are a deserving favourite after their ATC Cup win, but just think the weight could get the better of them here. Fresh off a little break and have the right gate (three) but Hyeronimus takes over for Berry and there are a few little queries here.
