Gai Waterhouse’s last star ATC Cup winning five-year-old Travolta has opened top of the markets to make it back-to-back stakes wins in this Thursday’s Summer Cup 2013 in Sydney.
The headline race of Boxing Day, the $125,000 Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) is set to run as Randwick Race 6 at 4:20pm (ASEST).
Originally drawing a field of 13 the line-up is now down to a dozen with Poste Restante withdrawn after drawing wide in gate 11.
Heading the field and weights is then the current $3.60 favourite Travolta, the Handsome Ransom gelding due to jump from gate three with Adam Hyeronimus aboard.
A winner of five of their 22 starts to date, Travolta has been ridden by Tommy Berry for their past two starts including a very smart two and a half length win in the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) at Rosehill on November 30.
They’ve had a month break to freshen-up and are now set to take on a similar class field, albeit carrying three kilos more than in the ATC Cup having been allocated 59kg for tomorrow.
There are then three other single figure chances in Summer Cup betting with:
- #12 Solemn ($4.80) – Peter Snowden-trained Bernardini four-year-old drawn one inside the favourite with gate two, this in-form up-and-comer certainly ticks a lot of boxes including getting in on the 54kg minimum meaning they meet Travolta a full five kilos better off, they’ve got the right weight and the right drawn and their lead-up form is also spot on as they’ve won their past two on the trot over 1550m and then 1800m at Randwick’s Kensington track
- #3 Destiny’s Kiss ($6) – Joe Pride-trained Power Of Destiny gelding has been racing against some quality types this season and just falling short including their last start sixth in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1550m), they were hampered at the start and badly checked near the 200m that run however so with more luck here over a more suitable distance, the galloper having won the Winter Cup over 2400m by a big margin back in July, expect them to be improved
- #2 Hoylonny ($8.50) – Chris Waller’s Lonhro five-year-old carries 58kg here after two good runs, backing up from a 1900m win at Rosehill they were second to Travolta in the ATC Cup and then carried 58kg to run a close third behind Permit in the Christmas Cup (2400m) a fortnight ago, will they appreciate the drop back in distance? Or will it be a little sharp?
Other notable hopes at more generous Summer Cup odds then include Tony McEvoy’s Sysmo ($10) for whom the 2000m looks ideal, the rails-drawn Midsummer Sun ($11) last seen running fourth in the Sandown Classic back in mid-November and the always honest staying type Scream Machine ($11).
