The Boxing Day racing action is top class around the country this year including tomorrow’s Christmas Stakes 2013 running at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne.

Don't Get Excited

Set to jump at 4:40pm (AEST) as the seventh race on the program, this year’s $120,000 Listed Mathew Camm Christmas Stakes (1200m) originally drew a final field of 12 hopefuls.

Following the early scratching of #9 Essay Raider however there are 11 remaining sprinters in the summer showdown.

Current favourite in the Christmas Stakes odds at a quote of $4.40 is the in-form Don’t Get Excited who has the outside barrier to overcome.

A Glen Boss mount allocated the 54kg minimum, the Stephen Theodore-trained Cranbourne galloper is after their sixth win from their past eight starts since being transferred from the care of their former trainer Austy Coffey.

The most recent of those was at Caulfield on December 7 when the Elvstroem four-year-old carried a hefty 60kg to victory over Solsay in a 1200m race on the back of a number of longer distanced assignments.

Set to relish the drop back six kilos for this, Don’t Get Excited had Boss aboard two back when finishing under a length and a half away fifth to Molto Bene in the Listed Tavern Stakes (1410m) at Flemington.

There are four other single figure chances in the Christmas Stakes field and betting markets then with:

  • #6 Loveyamadly ($5) – Mick Price-trained Bel Esprit mare has an awesome record of six wins and four minor placings from 11 starts with their only unplaced effort being in the Group 3 irwin Stakes in Adelaide at the end of a long prep during the autumn, she ran second in the Group 3 Bellmaine Stakes at Caulfield in February and is also a Listed winner at Moonee Valley from March, resumed off a lengthy eight month break in the Listed Doveton Stakes (1000m) earlier this month and was a brave second to the Vatican carrying 58.5kg, she’ll be fitter for the run and carries only 56.5kg here, big chance second-up
  • #3 Richie’s Vibe ($6) – Danerich four-year-old now trained locally by Tony Vasil having been through the hands of three other trainers in their short nine start career to date, a $10,000 bargain buy and has already won over $180,000 in prize money with four wins to their name including the Listed MSS Security Sprint on Melbourne Cup Day, last run was a decent fourth to Mahisara in the Group 3 Sandown Stakes (1400m) at the track on November 16, they are well up to this class, Damien Oliver stays on and 57kg is manageable
  • #5 Karacatis ($6) – Adelaide raider from the stables of Richard Jolly this Hussonet gelding hasn’t run since suffering from respiratory problems when seventh in a 1400m Flemington race on Emirates Stakes Day, have since recovered and are out for their first win since saluting in a black type at home first-up in September, has Group 1 form having run fourth when beaten just a length by Platelet in The Goodwood this may and on the right day are a danger here
  • #1 Chase The Rainbow ($8.50) – Rick Hore-Lacy-trained galloper carries the equal 58kg top weight with It Is Written, Dash For Cash stallion is first-up not having run since a three and a half length win at the track over 1400m back on September first, injury plagued throughout their career but still has won a quarter of a million in prize money from just seven starts, Group 2 winner over the Moonee Valley mile in September 2011, trialed well last month at Cranbourne and if they’re over their issues then more than capable of winning this

At juicer odds but not without their claims are then the likes of Solsay ($11) who was second to the Christmas Stakes favourite last time out, veteran seven-year-old after their first win since October 2011 Morant ($12) and It Is Written ($14).
