Travolta Tops 2013 Summer Cup Field & Weights

This Boxing Day, Thursday December 26, a host of black type racing is headlined by Sydney’s Summer Cup 2013 at Royal Randwick where the Gai Waterhouse-trained Travolta is set to carry the top weight.

The Handsome Ransom five-year-old is one of 12 remaining chances in this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) following the early scratching of #11 Poste Restante.

Leading the field with 59kg, Travolta vies for their second stakes win on the trot.

The Kiwi expat broke their black type maiden down under on November 30 with a big two and a half length effort in the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) at Rosehill.

They race for the first time since this week getting the same distance, and another good gate with barrier three, for the Summer Cup.

Following Travolta in the Summer Cup field and weights with 58kg is then the Chris Waller-trained Hoylonny in gate nine.

The nicely-bred Lonhro gelding won at Rosehill over 1900m three back before their second in the ATC Cup.

They backed up from that run at Randwick’s Kensington track on December 14 for a nice third behind Permit over the 2400m and how they handle the drop back to 2000m here will be key.

Waller has also accepted for his Danehill Dancer seven-year-old I’m Imposing out to improve on their first-up eighth at Randwick at the start of the month when carrying three kilos more than their 55kg allocation for Thursday.

Other big name runners at the top end of the field then include the Ron Quinton-trained Monton and Midsummer Sun both coming off fourth place finishes but drawn at opposite ends of the field in barriers 12 and one respectively.

Monton’s lead-up run was two weeks ago in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (15500m) when beaten only two and a half lengths while Sam Kavanagh’s monsoon five-year-old Midsummer Sun hasn’t raced since their fourth to Sertorius in the Group 2 Zipping Classic (2400m) at Caulfield in mid-November.

There are then two other last start winners along with Travolta.

In barrier two with Kerrin McEvoy to ride is one of those in the in-form Peter Snowden-trained Bernardini four-year-old Solemn coming off back-to-back victories at Kensington over 1550m and then 1800m.

The other is then Zoomania, Peter Moody’s hope drawn in barrier four and coming off a Moonee Valley win over 2040m.

The distance looks ideal for the Zabeel mare who had 58kg on her back last time out and who will appreciate the drop back to the 54kg minimum on boxing Day.
