No Perth Cup for 2013 WA St Leger Winner Crumpet O’Reilly

Despite an impressive win to make it five on the trot in Saturday’s WA St Leger 2013, Crumpet O’Reilly will not press on for a Perth Cup bid on New Year’s Day.

The Adam Durrant-trained O’Reilly four-year-old boosted their record to five wins from nine starts when breaking their black type maiden in the $100,000 Listed Perth Ice Works W.A. St Leger (2100m) at Ascot.

While the performance looked an ideal lead-up to a shot at the Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) back at the track on January 1, their Lark Hill-based trainer Durrant ruled out backing them up in the mile and a half classic.

Ridden on Saturday by regular hoop William Pike the gelding jumped the $2.40 favourite in WA St Leger betting having won their four lead-up runs by a collective eight and a half lengths.

They may have had the winning streak behind them but it was still a test for Crumpet O’Reilly who was racing over further than a mile for the first time.

They handled the distance without issue however despite having been taken to the front early finding themselves in unfamiliar territory as the pacesetter.

It was a risky strategic move by Pike who saw no other option after Crumpet O’Reilly got caught three wide early on a tedious pace.

The horse took it in their stride however and was able to hang on to post a half length win over the Shane Quilty-trained Fancy Feet ($5.50), the mare having won her past two on the trot also.

In a photo for third just a nose off Fancy Feet was then Michael Grant’s Consolidator mare Looking Ahead ($6).

Still being only lightly raced and having had a big campaign, Crumpet O’Reilly will now be sent to the paddock for a freshen-up.

Durrant though hasn’t completely put out the Perth Cup flame saying the 2015 edition of the race looked right up his star galloper’s alley.

“He’s not ready,” he told The West Australian on Saturday.

“We’ve got to look after him.

“He’ll be spelled and have a light winter prep.

“He looks ideal for the (2015) Perth Cup.”
