Magnifisio Wins 2013 RS Crawford Stakes

Jim Taylor’s smart mare Magnifisio posted her second win in as many Saturday’s over the weekend with a good victory in the RS Crawford Stakes 2013 on CB Cox Stakes Day.

The Magnus four-year-old went out as the $3.20 favourite in this year’s $100,000 Listed R.S. Crawford Stakes (1000m) and was able to salute for the punters.

Backing up from a stellar three length effort over 1200m at the track on December 14 she handled the short back-up and the drop back in distance.

Flying from the gates Jason Brown in the saddle, the eventual RS Crawford Stakes winner settled fifth off the pace before pulling out a scintillating late burst.

Drawing away over the final 200m, by the line Magnifisio had a length and a half to spare over the Neville Parnham-trained outsider Excelorada ($18) who improved on a last start fifth at the track and distance 21 days earlier.

In third a further half length further back was then Eric Wake’s resuming Due Sasso gelding Dueton ($4.40) in their first run in four months, a brave effort considering they were caught up early and unable to get a clear run until the straight.

Disappointment of the race meanwhile was the $3.40 second elect The Rising who could only manage to finish sixth and who is now out in the paddock.

The victory boosted Magnifisio’s prize money earned to $343,300 and rewarded a late minute decision to run.

“She wasn’t going to start,” Taylor explained to The West Australian on Saturday.

“She was going to the (Listed Summer) Scorcher (on New Year’s Day), but she came through her last run that well I put her in.

“She did so well this week I was pretty confident.”

It was also her first black type assignment indicating bigger and better things to come over the New Year.

“It makes her very valuable, being from Barakey’s family,” Taylor said.

“She’s a great filly.”

She could still be given a shot at the $100,000 Summer Scorcher over the same track and distance on Perth Cup Day next race too when the action of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival continues.

The headline race of the day is of course the Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m).

Futures Perth Cup betting is currently led by Rohan who ran a nice trial when third to ihtsahymn in the CB Cox Stakes on Saturday.
