Love Rocks Lough Neagh Stakes 2013 Results

Steve Tregea’s Toowoomba based galloper Love Rocks made it three straight in Brisbane on the weekend with their tidy win in the 2013 Lough Neagh Stakes at Doomben Racecourse.

After an impressive three and a half length Eagle Farm victory in November the Stratum four-year-old was equally as good at Doomben earlier this month with a two and a half length Class 6 win from a wide barrier.

Over the weekend they kept the winning streak going, this time stepping up to black type company for the $175,000 Listed Lough Neagh Stakes (1350m).

Ridden by their regular hoop Anthony Allen Love Rocks ($5) was able to step up in both class and distance for their maiden stakes assignment where they came close to breaking the course record.

On the line the up-and-comer had nearly two lengths to spare over the Kelso Wood-trained Benny’s Buttons ($9) with Stuart Kendrick’s outside chance Doubtfilly ($26), back ahead of a shot at the Magic Millions at the Gold Coast next month, finishing off the trifecta a further half length away for third.

Race favourtie Lucky Hussler ($4.80F) meanwhile was far from disgraced crossing three and a quarter lengths off the winner in third.

Love Rocks won in a smart 1:17.43, just outside of natural Destiny’s record time set in the 2006 edition of the Lough Neagh Stakes.

It wasn’t only the horse’s first stakes victory but that of their jockey Allen who dedicated the victory to his late sister who died before her second birthday when Allen was just 17.

“This is by far the best day of my career. I want to thank the family of Steve Tregea for letting me ride the horse,” Allen told the Courier Mail post-win.

“I have a tattoo on my back of (my sister) Indiana and I dedicate all my riding to her.

“It’s a thrill to win the race so easily.

“It’s taken a lot of hard work and I owe so much to my boss (Steele Ryan).

“We came up with a new approach to my riding and he just never stops helping me. I call him ‘boss’ but he’s more like a mate to me.”

Tregea was quick to throw the praise back to Allen who he’s been happy to put on his horses backs for a while now.

“He’s a mighty little rider,” Tregea said. “He’s had eight to 10 rides for me and I haven’t been unhappy with any of them.”

Tregea was also super impressed with Love Rocks who was able to shrug off a midrace challenge from Mishani Warrior, who faded to finish ninth, and continue to push until the very end.

“It was a huge class rise and no claim today, plus the extra distance, but he didn’t know about it did he?” Tregea said.

“When he kicked on the turn I was relatively confident. The horse had just done so well this week. Everything was right.

“Given where he’s come from, we’re just happy to be here.

“But I have always loved the horse. He always did everything so effortlessly.”

The next big races during the Brisbane summer series take place this coming Saturday, December 28, including the $200,000 Listed Bernborough Handicap (1615m) for those gallopers looking for the mile.
