In a relatively open field of three and four-year-old Perth gallopers, Crumpet O’Reilly has opened top of the 2013 W.A. St Leger odds at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday.
While most of Lark Hill trainer Adam Durrant’s attention will be on his 2014 Perth Cup hope Mr Moet in the $250,000 Group 2 CB Cox Stakes (2100m), he will also have one eye firmly on his flying four-year-old Crumpet O’Reilly earlier in the day.
One of nine final acceptors for Ascot Race 4, the O’Reilly gelding vies for their fifth win on the trot in the $100,000 Listed Perth Ice Works W.A. St. Leger (2100m).
Drawn out wide in gate nine with William Pike to ride, Crumpet O’Reilly resumed at Northam with a first-up second on October 10 before winning their next four starts on the trot by a collective nine and a half lengths.
Their most recent effort was a narrow Ascot win over 1500m from November 30 when carrying 58kg, the same weight they carry under the set weights conditions of the WA St Leger.
Based on their star lead-up form they’ve opened favourite in WA St Leger betting paying $2.60 at Ladbrokes.com.au to keep the winning streak going.
There may only be eight rivals for them to defeat on Saturday when they go up to the 2100m for the first time, but four of those are also under $10 in the markets.
Second favourite at $4.40 is Northpace in gate two running second up for the season.
Fred Kersley’s Cape North gelding resumed on December 7 when eight to Comfysofa over 1400m, an effort that was better than it looked considering they were defeated under two lengths.
A known stayer who won the Dayana Plate over 2000m in July before their third in the Listed Belmont Classic (2200m) Northpace is expected to improve as they go up to 2100m on Saturday.
The next best in betting are then the Shane Quilty-trained mare Fancy Feet ($5) undefeated this time in thanks to back-to-back wins over 1500m and 1600m respectively at Ascot, and Looking Ahead ($5.50) with the rails run from barrier one.
Saturday will be the first black type start for Fath four-year-old Fancy Feet since her close third to Moreish in the Listed Natasha Stakes (2200m) back in March while Consolidator mare Looking Ahead comes off a fourth to Knightlike in the Listed GA Towton Cup (2200m) from earlier this month.
Rounding out the single figure fancies at $7 is then Ben Pearce’s Vital Equine three-year-old Vital Edition who also comes into the race off some crack spring – summer form.
After a Westspeed 3YO win over 1500m last month the youngster was competitive again stepping up to 1800m a fortnight ago when third to Newton Prince in the Listed Aquanita Stakes.
