Sweet Idea Returns To Racing With Wyong Magic Millions Stakes Win

Sweet Idea fought off a gallant Weinholt to win the Wyong Magic Millions Stakes (1100m) yesterday in her first race appearance since being banned for bleeding during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival.

Sweet Idea returned to the races for the first time since August with a tough win in the Woyng Magic Millions Stakes.

Sweet Idea was well-backed to record the third victory of her racing career and looked as though she was going to do it easily when jockey James McDonald took her straight to the lead on the rail in the early stages of the race.

The Snitzel filly wobbled slightly heading into the straight and was challenged by a fast-finishing Weinholt, who loomed as the winner, but the three-year-old was able to fight back and record a tough win that strengthened her grip on the favoritism for the 2013 Magic Millions Guineas at the Gold Coast on January 11.

Mark Newnham, stable foreman for Gai Waterhouse, said that he was confident Sweet Idea would return to the races with a victory and was happy with the way she responded when tested by Weinholt.

“From barrier one at level weights you expect them to win and you want to see them win,” Newnham said after the race.

“I think she is just one of those fillies that is never going to make it look easy but she loves a challenge and she puts her head out when it counts,” he said.

“The best part today was the last part and she can put herself right on the speed and that is an advantage at the Gold Coast.”

Weinholt was returning to the races for the first time since he finished at the tail of the field in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) and did more than enough to suggest that he could be a factor in the Magic Millions Guineas next month.

Claire Cunningham from the Moody stable in New South Wales was looking after Weinholt for the first time and she was very happy with the performance of the Stratum colt.

“He’ll mainly improve in the way of education, having his first run in this direction,” Cunningham said.

“To ask him to put it all together around a track like Wyong and run down quite a classy filly, it’s not disappointing the way he’s run today.”
