The sole black type in Brisbane this weekend is the 2013 Lough Neagh Stakes, betting tips on the summer series showdown from the Races.com.au team listed below.
Due to jump at 4:20pm (local) as Race 8 at Doomben Racecourse, this year’s $175,000 Lough Neagh Stakes (1350m) has drawn a final field of 14.
Six of those are under $10 in the latest markets making it a tough task to separate the genuine contenders from the pretenders here.
Current favourite in the Lough Neagh Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $4 is the Kent Fleming-trained Lucky Hussler.
The in-form four-year-old is second-up here having won the Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m) at the track last start on December 7.
They get a gate for their second-up run having come up with barrier four, but must handle a rise from 54kg to 56kg.
The next best in Lough Neagh Stakes betting are then fellow four-year-old Love Rocks ($4.50) after their third Brisbane win on the trot and George Moore runner-up Morning Captain ($6.50).
So when you are locking in your Lough Neagh Stakes trifecta bets, should you be sticking to the top three in betting?
Or is there an upset Lough Neagh Stakes result on the cards in 2013 from the likes of Benny’s Buttons ($8) whose George Moore run can be forgotten, or even the resuming Mishani Warrior ($15) who was on fire before their September freshen-up?
#5 Lucky Hussler ($4)
Think the George Moore, as it has been in recent years, will be the form line to follow for the Lough Neagh and while the first three over the line there are all in with a shot on Saturday, think with the weight and gate Lucky Hussler can go back-to-back. They go up in weights but have class to handle it and Michael Cahill has plenty of options from nice gate four draw. Handled them last time and should do it again with the right run.
#4 Benny’s Buttons ($8)
First-up run was a cracker when only just beaten by Better Than Ready in the Listed Keith Noud Handicap (1200m) at Eagle Farm from a wide gate (12 of 15). Then things went amiss in the George Moore where they were injured and lost a plate during the run. Eventually crossed eighth and is out to atone for that here. Cahill jumps off for the first time this prep however opting for Lucky Hussler in this one with Ric McMahon to take over. Drawn in gate two so that’s in their favour and should be fitter third-up and able to improve without another setback.
#2 Morning Captain ($6.50)
Comes off a good second to Lucky Hussler in the George Moore when beaten just a long neck. Before that they came close again beaten just half a length in the Keith Noud which came after a win at Eagle Farm over 1300m. Saturday’s distance looks ideal but they do go up to 58kg and have gate nine, both of which could be better. Still their lead-up is spot-on, has class, flying form this prep, no issues at the track, plenty to like.
